The story of this rug

A central medallion inside a frame is what the product record specifies for this one, and in the Mamluk vocabulary that means a large geometric rosette holding the middle with the rest of the field organized around it rather than growing out of it.

01What the yarn is

Blue ground, handwoven wool, made in Afghanistan, 174 × 250 cm (5'9" × 8'2"), cotton and synthetic declared alongside. A single piece. Blue is the color the Cairene workshops actually used, alongside red and green, so a blue Mamluk sits closer to the historical range than most modern readings of the pattern do.

02A line from the archive

The medallion in this arrangement is not a Persian one. Persian medallions are lobed and drawn with a pen; a Mamluk center is built out of straight-sided geometry, an octagon or an eight-pointed star with smaller units packed around its edges, and the whole field is constructed to that same logic outward to the border. Woven by hand in Afghanistan, in a repertoire that came out of Egypt five hundred years ago and has been kept alive largely by weavers with no connection to it.

03How it feels underfoot

Wool, cotton and synthetic are all declared. One practical note about a centered design at this size: the medallion has to be visible for the rug to do its job, so a coffee table sitting squarely on it takes the composition apart.

At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.

It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.

Care — three rules

Vacuum regularly

Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.

Treat spills before they dry

Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.

Leave washing to a professional

Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.

Which size should I choose for a living room?

At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.

How long does shipping take, and what does it cost?

Can the rug be used over underfloor heating?

It depends on the pile height. Low-pile woven rugs work with underfloor heating and do not block the heat. If you are unsure, send the product code to Client Services on WhatsApp.

How does the price change between sizes?

Pricing is by the square meter. The price per square meter is shown next to the price, and it updates as you select a size.
