Yellow Karabağ Rose Handwoven Wool Kilim

A Karabağ-pattern kilim that has thrown away the dark ground: handwoven in wool on a cotton warp in Moldova, 162 × 232 cm (5'4" × 7'7"), with red and green roses laid over a bright yellow field.

01Coming off the loom

Flat-woven, no pile, one piece. The color reversal is the whole reason this one exists. Karabağ weaving almost always sets its roses against something dark, and that convention is old enough that reversing it counts as a decision rather than an accident.

02Up close to the pattern

On yellow the same flowers behave differently: the reds come forward instead of glowing out of shadow, and the greens, which would vanish on black, hold their own. In a room that already takes light the field goes near-gold by afternoon.

03Knot by knot, by hand

In a north-facing one it stays closer to raw wool yellow, which is the more honest version of it. Weavers in Moldova made it by hand, wool weft packed down over cotton warps, continuing a tradition they did not invent and have not let go.

04The origin of the pattern

The roses are drawn at the large scale Karabağ is known for — few motifs, each given room. Originals of this kind get harder to find every year. Yellow at this saturation is also not a neutral: it will set the tone of any room it goes into, and if the walls are already warm it may be one warm thing too many.

05Color that shifts through the day
