Black Karabağ Rose Handwoven Wool Kilim Runner

Moldova is where this one was made: a handwoven wool kilim in the Karabağ manner, 94 × 268 cm (3'1" × 8'10"), flat-woven by hand on a cotton warp, with large red roses opening across a black ground. Long and narrow, so it works as a runner. A single piece. The black field is what identifies a Karabağ. Almost nothing else in flatweave uses a ground that dark, and the roses — full-blown, drawn large, spaced rather than crowded — are what the dark is there to carry.

01Underfoot

Red against black is a hard contrast in daylight and a soft one by lamp, and in a corridor the eye follows the roses along the length like markers. Karabağ is a region in the South Caucasus whose weaving vocabulary traveled with the people who carried it; these were woven in Moldova by weavers keeping that vocabulary alive. Wool weft beaten down over a cotton warp, entirely by hand, with no pile: a kilim's pattern is its structure.

Pieces of this kind turn up anywhere from thirty to ninety years old, kept folded in chests, and the trade calls the older end semi-antique — a usage with no issuing body behind it, so treat the label as shorthand rather than a certificate.

02When you walk in

At 94 cm wide it is narrow for a room and right for a hall. Being flat, it slides on a polished floor without an underlay. Cleaning belongs to a specialist.
