Black Karabagh Handwoven Wool Kilim

Karabagh is one of the few names on a rug that describes both the drawing and the place it came from, and this kilim answers to it twice: the pattern is Karabagh and so is the origin. A handwoven wool flatweave on a black ground, 214 × 300 cm (7'0" × 9'10"), with the region's dense multicolored geometry across the field. Black as a kilim ground does something no other color does: it takes the background out of the eye entirely, so the motifs appear to float rather than to sit on anything.

01Color that shifts through the day

Every other color in the piece is read against that absence, which is why reds look hotter and creams brighter on a black-ground kilim than the same yarns would on cream. Karabagh drawing is angular and closely packed, and black gives it the room it needs. Handwoven in wool in the Karabagh region.

02Coming off the loom

A flatweave has no pile to hide behind, so every join between color areas is a structural decision — the weaver either interlocks the wefts or leaves a slit where two colors meet, and on a piece this size that choice gets made a few thousand times. It is the kind of work that does not show unless it goes wrong. Have it washed by someone used to dark flatweaves; a black ground reports every mark a bad clean leaves.
