Classic pattern. The motif is built row by row as the weaving advances; it is only seen whole once it comes off the loom. The ground color is navy blue, blue.
This rug is woven in China. The place of production is written on the spec sheet; it comes straight from the workshop that wove it, with no reseller chain.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. For everyday care use a head without a beater bar and follow the direction of the pile; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
A medallion of cream and gold splits the navy in two
A single large medallion holds the middle, drawn in cream and gold, with floral work filling everything around it. Navy Medallion Hand-Knotted Silk-Blend Rug, 129 × 181 cm (4'3" × 5'11"), knotted by hand in China in cotton, viscose and silk, with red and beige running through the border.
There is one of it. Navy is the ground and it refuses to stay still. Against a window the blue opens and the gold in the medallion catches; away from the light it closes to something near black and the cream drawing is all that survives.
That shift is what the silk in the pile is for. The border keeps the whole from being severe — red and beige, warmer than anything in the field, which is the classical way of framing a dark medallion. Hundreds of thousands of knots were tied by hand for a piece this size, in cotton, viscose and silk rather than in silk alone.
The result is thin in the hand, closer to a textile than to a floor covering, which suits an entrance, a bedside, or the floor immediately in front of a desk, and does not suit a room where furniture gets dragged about. A thin rug on a hard floor will travel without an underlay under it.
The washing needs a workshop that takes silk. Knotted by hand in China, in a cotton, viscose and silk mixture. A cream-and-gold central medallion inside a floral field. Red and beige in the border, warming a navy ground. The navy opens toward the light and closes away from it. 129 × 181 cm (4'3" × 5'11") — for an entrance, a study or a bedside. Thin and light; needs an underlay on a hard floor. Cleaning belongs to a workshop that takes silk pile. Medallion rugs were designed for rooms where people sat on the floor, and they still reward being looked at from low down.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
