Golden Yellow Floral Overdyed Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

This rug was woven once and finished twice. It is an old Anatolian hand-knotted wool rug, 193 × 288 cm (6'4" × 9'5"), taken back to a short pile with shears and then overdyed a golden yellow, so the original floral motifs and fine border lines now show through a single warm tone.

01How it feels underfoot

Wool pile on a cotton foundation. One piece. Overdyeing does something no new rug can imitate: the dye takes differently on wool that has already aged, so the flowers and the thin ruled lines between them come up a half-shade off the field instead of sitting in their own colors. What you see is the ghost of the first rug under the second.

02Which tone on the ground

Gold is the tone chosen here, and it does what gold does — it raises the light level of the room and reads warmest in the late afternoon, when the shorn pile stops holding any shadow at all. Old Anatolian rugs are bought in, sorted, shaved down and re-dyed in a controlled process, and this one came through that. Shaving takes the height off the pile, which leaves the rug thin, light and flexible enough to roll under one arm, and gives dirt very little depth to sink into.

It also means the surface is harder underfoot than a full-pile rug — closer to a heavy cloth than to a cushion. 03The tone of the ground

One rug, no repeat. Bohemian rooms are usually where these end up, though it is in a plain modern one, against a gray sofa, that the yellow does its most surprising work.
