Yellow Medallion Vintage Hand-Knotted Wool Rug: a central medallion sitting inside a framing border, on a yellow ground that runs toward gold, 168 × 277 cm (5'6" × 9'1"). It was hand-knotted in Anatolia, then sheared, re-dyed and dried. There is one. 01Which tone on the ground

Here it works because the color is so warm: the gold-yellow ground holds the middle steady and the border repeats just enough to close the composition without competing. Late in the day the whole field goes the color of low sun on a wall.

The fine knotting of the original weave is still readable in the medallion's outline, which is the part of any rug where poor knotting shows first. Wool where a foot lands, cotton where it does not.
