The story of this rug

At 94 × 146 cm (3'1" × 4'9") it is a small piece, and the size is the argument: a wool piece handwoven in Anatolia with Sivas Zara motifs, banded down the middle in green, burgundy, navy, purple and beige, and framed all round by a warm yellow.

01A line from the archive

It goes where a large rug cannot. The shawl patterns of Zara, a district in Sivas province, run in narrow horizontal bands rather than around a central medallion, and that is precisely why the drawing survives being shrunk to this size. Each band carries its own small repeat, so the eye travels along the rug instead of into it.

02After the color

The yellow is the surprise: a saturated, nearly mustard field, and it holds five other colors without any of them going muddy. Under a side table, beside a bed, or in a reading corner it does more than a rug three times its area would. Women weaving in Anatolia made it, and the Turkish description is plain about how long that takes: months, for a piece this size, in first-quality wool. The fleece has been left with its own luster rather than sheared flat, so the colors sit deep and change slightly with the angle of the light.

03From the hand of the weaver

Being handwoven, it is not perfectly rectangular — the bands drift by a few millimeters and the edges are not ruled lines. That is the register of the thing, not a fault in it. Day to day it wants nothing more than a vacuum; the real washing is specialist work. Handwoven in Anatolia by women weavers, in first-quality wool. Sivas Zara motifs, set in horizontal bands rather than around a medallion. A yellow field holding green, burgundy, navy, purple and beige. 94 × 146 cm (3'1" × 4'9") — for a corner, a bedside or an entry. The surface keeps the natural luster of the fleece. Small irregularities in the banding come with the technique. Vacuum regularly; professional washing when it is needed. Small rugs are usually bought to close a gap.

Care — three rules

Vacuum regularly

Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.

Treat spills before they dry

Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.

Leave washing to a professional

Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.

It depends on the pile height. Low-pile woven rugs work with underfloor heating and do not block the heat. If you are unsure, send the product code to Client Services on WhatsApp.

Pricing is by the square meter. The price per square meter is shown next to the price, and it updates as you select a size.
