02Highlights

Four things that set this rug apart

01

Wool yarn

The air trapped between wool fibers holds heat and keeps the cold of the floor from your feet. The same air balances humidity in summer.

02

Authentic pattern

Authentic pattern. The motif is built while the rug is woven; there is no layer printed on afterward. There is red in the ground.

03

Türkiye weaving tradition

This rug is woven in Türkiye. Where a rug is from is read in its knot and its yarn more than in its pattern; that is why the place on the spec sheet matters.

04

Professional cleaning

Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Once a week with a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile, is enough for everyday care.

Red Oushak Hand-Knotted Plant-Dyed Wool Rug — product specifications

The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.

05

The story of this rug

The house dates this one at a hundred and thirty years, which puts it comfortably inside the antique band as the trade uses that word. A hand-knotted Oushak in red, 118 × 164 cm (3'10" × 5'5"), wool throughout, colored with kök boya.

01From the hand of the weaver

Under two square meters, and there is no second one anywhere. Rugs from that town have been reaching Europe since the fifteenth century, which is why the drawing turns up painted into Renaissance interiors long before anyone in the West was writing about weaving.

02Color, by the light

The characteristic Oushak field is loosely drawn and generously spaced — few motifs, each of them large, on a red or soft yellow ground — and it is the opposite instinct from a court rug, where the ambition is to fill everything.

03What the yarn is

At a hundred and thirty years the plant reds here have gone the whole way toward brick and terracotta, and abrash bands cross the field where one dye bath gave out and another took over. Nothing but wool appears in the yarn record — pile and foundation alike, as village and small-town looms worked.

04Color that shifts through the day

There is no way to be delicate about the condition question on a rug of this age: the pile is low, the ends have been repaired or lost at some point in thirteen decades, and the color at one end will not match the other exactly. Those are the terms on which nineteenth-century rugs exist at all.

05Coming off the loom

It wants a washer who handles antique pieces, and it wants an underlay, because a thin old rug slides. Hand-knotted in Oushak, western Anatolia; wool pile and wool foundation. Kök boya dyeing throughout, with the red long since settled toward brick. Loosely drawn Oushak field — few motifs, generously spaced. Abrash bands cross the field where the dye baths changed. 118 × 164 cm (3'10" × 5'5"), a little under two square meters. About a hundred and thirty years old, with the low pile and end wear that implies. Antique-rug washing only, and use an underlay.

One piece. Rugs like this one are getting harder to find in original condition every year, and that is simply how the world is rather than a reason to hurry.

07

Which size fits your room?

The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:

Living room

At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.

Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380

Dining room

It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.

Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340

Bedroom

Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.

Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340

Hallway · runner

Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.

Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490

08

Care — three rules

Vacuum regularly

Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.

Treat spills before they dry

Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.

Leave washing to a professional

Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.

09

Frequently asked

Which size should I choose for a living room?

At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.

How long does shipping take, and what does it cost?

For international orders, shipping, duties and taxes are calculated at checkout and paid in advance; there is no cash on delivery. Rugs in stock leave Ankara within 1–3 business days.

Can I return it if I do not like it?

Yes. You can return it within 14 days of delivery, no questions asked. On international orders return shipping is paid by the buyer.

Will the color match what I see on screen?

Small differences in tone are possible depending on your screen. Open the images full screen to study the surface, and watch the review video where there is one. If you want to be sure, you can see the rug in person at our showroom in Çankaya, Ankara.

Can the rug be used over underfloor heating?

It depends on the pile height. Low-pile woven rugs work with underfloor heating and do not block the heat. If you are unsure, send the product code to Client Services on WhatsApp.

How does the price change between sizes?

Pricing is by the square meter. The price per square meter is shown next to the price, and it updates as you select a size.

Can I see the rug in Ankara?

Yes. At our showroom in Çankaya, Ankara you can see the rugs in this series and touch the weave. No appointment is needed.

Can I ask for a size that is not listed?

Custom sizes can be woven in many series. Send your measurements on WhatsApp and we will come back with a production time and a price.
