Modern pattern. The ground and the motif are not parts of separate processes but of the same weave; the two advance together.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. We write down where it comes from, because we want to be able to name the workshop when someone asks.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. What wears a rug down over the years is not a stain but the dust that settles at the base of the pile and grinds the fibers from inside with every step.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Thin, light, overdyed red: 121 × 178 cm from Anatolia
Red first, then a navy line around the edge: a hand-knotted Anatolian rug of an earlier generation, 121 × 178 cm (4'0" × 5'10"), shorn short and overdyed a deep red, with a navy detail running along the border.
Wool pile on a cotton foundation, and only this one. Small rugs have to be decisive, and the red here is not a soft brick or a rust — it is saturated enough to set the temperature of a whole corner.
The navy at the edge is the counterweight. Without it the rug would simply be a red rectangle; with it there is a frame, and the traditional motifs held inside the field acquire somewhere to stop. Under electric light the red deepens toward oxblood.
In daylight it comes back up and the navy is what stays dark. The rug was tied by hand in Anatolia a generation or more back, then pulled out of storage, thinned with shears, re-dyed and dried.
It is thin and it is light — a rug this size in this condition can be picked up and shaken out — and the short pile means less depth for grit to work into and an easier surface to keep. Some of the original weaving irregularities survive the process: a slightly wandering edge, a border that is not exactly the same width all the way round.
Professional washing is what it needs. An older hand-knotted Anatolian rug, reworked: shaved, overdyed, dried. Wool pile on a cotton foundation. Deep red field with a navy detail at the border. 121 × 178 cm (4'0" × 5'10") — a hallway, a desk, beside a bed. Thin and flexible; easy to move and easy to lift. Short pile, so there is little for grit to settle into. Irregular edges and border widths are original to the rug. Professional washing; a single piece. In a restaurant or an office it will take the traffic; at home it is the thing that stops a corridor being only a corridor.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
