The story of this rug

The middle of this rug is deliberately empty. Cream Floral Handwoven Wool Rug, Emirgan Series — made in the Turkish Aegean in wool and viscose, with flowers gathered toward the edges in purple, cream and green and a plain center left for whatever furniture ends up standing on it. It is an old decision and a practical one: a coffee table on a busy field cancels both.

01A line from the archive

Here the drawing crowds the border and thins as it travels inward, so a table sits in open ground and the pattern frames it. The palette runs to three colors and stops there — cream carrying purple and green rather than the reverse — and it lifts a dark parquet floor instead of adding weight to one.

02Where it sits in the house

Against gilded classical furniture it behaves like a period piece; against walnut with a modern line it turns into something else entirely. With very dark furniture it does neither, and Halıcızade advises against that pairing. Weavers in the Aegean, the region that has carried Turkish weaving longest, worked it by hand in wool and viscose: viscose in the warp, wool and viscose together in the weft.

03First contact

That combination gives the surface both its softness and its faint shine, and it also makes the rug more delicate than one built over a cotton foundation. The fringes are plaited flat like ribbon, a finish rather than a flourish — it keeps the ends from unraveling into a fray.

04The Wool on the surface

It needs a professional wash, and it needs one rarely. Handwoven in the Turkish Aegean. Viscose warp, wool and viscose weft — soft surface, low sheen. Purple, cream and green, with the flowers concentrated toward the border. The center is left plain so furniture standing on it stays legible. Fringes plaited flat, like ribbon, at both ends. More delicate than a cotton-foundation rug; it wants care in cleaning. Professional washing only.

A single piece. Move the table and you get the rug back; that is the whole design, and somebody took a long time arriving at it.

Which size fits your room?

The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:

Living room

At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.

Dining room

It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.

Bedroom

Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.

Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.

Care — three rules

Vacuum regularly

Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.

Treat spills before they dry

Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.

Leave washing to a professional

Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.

Which size should I choose for a living room?

At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.

How long does shipping take, and what does it cost?

Can the rug be used over underfloor heating?

It depends on the pile height. Low-pile woven rugs work with underfloor heating and do not block the heat. If you are unsure, send the product code to Client Services on WhatsApp.

How does the price change between sizes?

Pricing is by the square meter. The price per square meter is shown next to the price, and it updates as you select a size.

Can I see the rug in Ankara?

Can I ask for a size that is not listed?

Custom sizes can be woven in many series. Send your measurements on WhatsApp and we will come back with a production time and a price.
