Cream and Brown Geometric Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

No dye was used on it at all. The cream, brown and gray in this 175 × 242 cm (5'9" × 7'11") rug are the fleece's own colors, sorted by shade before spinning and then hand-knotted in Türkiye into a geometric field on a cotton foundation. Working without dye means working with what the sheep provided, which restricts the palette to the range between white and near-black and makes the sorting as important as the weaving.

01Color that shifts through the day

The geometry is drawn in those natural tones alone, so the pattern separates by value rather than by color — a quieter effect than a dyed rug gives, and one that does not date, because there is no fashion in undyed wool.

02Reading the motif

It is ethnic drawing rather than classical: angular forms, repeated at a small scale, with no medallion and no floral element. Wool through the pile, cotton in the foundation. The colors will not fade because there is nothing in them to fade, which is the practical advantage of undyed yarn and the reason a rug like this can sit in a sunlit room without being turned twice a year.

03Which tone on the ground

The limitation is the other side of the same fact: what you see is the whole range available, and it cannot be matched to a color scheme that needs a red or a blue. Wipe it as marks appear; a rug washer for anything more. Knotted by hand in Türkiye — wool pile, cotton foundation.
