Brown Oushak Hand-Knotted Wool Runner, Harem Series

At 75 × 310 cm (2'6" × 10'2") this is a corridor piece before it is anything else: a brown Oushak-pattern rug knotted by hand in Türkiye by Çınar Halı, in Erzurum wool with silk yarn worked alongside it, its drawing lifted from the fourteenth- and fifteenth-century patterns of Oushak.

01Coming off the loom

One piece at this length. What Çınar does with those old branch-and-rosette families is redraw them at a scale that suits a present-day room rather than reproduce them line for line, and the international awards the house has taken are for the drawing rather than for the weaving. Brown holds the result well.

02Up close to the pattern

It is the ground that lets a long, narrow rug carry a busy pattern without a hallway starting to feel crowded, and beside dark furniture the motifs come forward instead of sinking into the floor. Erzurum fleece is the material, spun for its shine and its spring, and the pile is tied with the double knot — two loops across every pair of warps rather than one, and the surface takes roughly twice the wear for it.

03The Wool on the surface

The yarns are first-grade wool and silk, spun into the same pile. Weaving of this class in this width has become steadily harder to find, which says something about the trade rather than about this rug.

04Knot by knot, by hand

Send it to a washer who works on hand-knotted rugs and to nobody else. Hand-knotted in Türkiye by Çınar Halı, a house whose designs have taken international awards. Erzurum wool with first-grade silk yarn worked in beside it. Tied with the double knot, which is what gives the surface its resistance. The pattern follows fourteenth- and fifteenth-century Oushak drawing, redrawn at a modern scale. 75 × 310 cm (2'6" × 10'2") — a hallway, a landing, or the length of an office anteroom. Only 75 cm across, so it will not sit under furniture; this is a rug to walk down. Washing is work for a specialist. One piece at this length.
