Cream Oushak-Pattern Hand-Knotted Wool Rug, Harem Series

Cream, gold-yellow, beige, pale green and a faded blush pink: five colors, none of them loud, arranged over Oushak drawing on a rug of 211 × 281 cm (6'11" × 9'3"). Woven in Türkiye at the Çınar Halı workshops, which supply the Harem series, in first-shearing wool with silk running through the same pile. There is one. The palette is why this piece was chosen.

01Comes from from Anatolia

Read together the five tones behave like a bed of flowers seen from across a lawn, distinct up close and continuous from the doorway, and the traditional Anatolian drawing underneath is what keeps the effect from turning decorative.

02Where it is laid

Nothing in the field is dark enough to anchor a room by force. What it does instead is lift one — in a space with cream walls and light oak the rug disappears into the scheme, and in a room of heavy furniture it is the one pale thing that stops the whole from closing in. Çınar Halı, which has taken international awards for its designs, is the maker.

03From ground to pile

Its wool comes from the first shearing of Erzurum fleece, the clip taken from an animal that has never been sheared before, brighter and softer than any cut that follows, and silk goes into the pile beside it.

04Coming off the loom

The construction is the symmetrical Turkish knot over two warps at high density, slow work, and the reason the house files this weaving class among its rare pieces. A cream ground shows what a dark one hides, so keep it out of a hallway, and let a professional washer be the only person who ever wets it. 05From the hand of the weaver

The series is knotted at a count that takes far longer per square meter than a commercial weave, on first-shearing fleece and silk, and the number of Turkish looms still working to that standard falls every year.

06The Wool on the surface

Scarcity here is a fact about supply. Why can only a professional wash this rug? Silk and wool in one pile respond differently to water, heat and detergent, and a pale ground gives an error nowhere to hide. A trained washer controls temperature and drying in a way a domestic clean cannot, which is why the house limits it to them. Pale rugs age visibly and then stop; after the first few years the cream settles into a color it keeps.
