On the surface: Natural, Wool. The kind of yarn sets the hand of the rug, its shine and what its care asks, all together.
Classic pattern; the motif edges sit on the order of the warp, so they come out sharp. The ground is cream.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. Knowing where a rug comes from is not only a matter of curiosity: yarn, dye and weaving habits change from region to region.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. In a rug in direct sun the color opens unevenly over the years; drawing the curtain halfway or turning the rug now and then prevents that.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Cream to beige, with burgundy flowers let loose over it
Harem Series Oushak-Pattern Handwoven Cream Rug — a cream and beige ground with burgundy flowers scattered across it, 219 × 304 cm (7'2" × 10'0"), handwoven in Türkiye from Erzurum's first-shearing wool and tied with the double Gördes knot. The flowers are spread rather than arranged, which is why the field reads as a garden and not as a diagram. Cream and beige shift into one another across the ground with no hard line between them, so the field has depth before any motif is counted.
The burgundy is the only strong color and it appears in the blossoms alone, at intervals wide enough that each one is seen separately. The border draws the same flower down to a smaller scale and repeats it.
In a north-facing room the cream cools toward oatmeal and the burgundy holds; under lamplight the whole field warms and the flowers recede into it. The wool comes from the first shearing of the season in Erzurum, which is the softest and the most lustrous fleece a sheep gives, and it was woven by Çınar Halı, a workshop with international design awards behind it. The Gördes knot is the symmetrical Turkish knot, tied around two warps rather than one; used double, as here, it produces a firmer back and a pattern that will not slip out of register over decades of use.
Rugs at this knot count and in this class are becoming rare, and only an experienced wash house should be allowed near it. Handwoven in Türkiye by Çınar Halı from first-shearing Erzurum fleece. 219 × 304 cm (7'2" × 10'0"). Tied with the double Gördes knot — the symmetrical Turkish knot — at a high count. Burgundy flowers scattered over a cream-to-beige ground, with the same flower repeated in the border. First-shearing fleece is why the pile is both soft and bright. Pieces at this weaving class are increasingly scarce. Washing by an experienced rug specialist only. It will sit under a dark dining table without disappearing, and in a pale room it will be the only thing with any color in it.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
