The story of this rug

It is the Turkish word for the nomadic and semi-nomadic peoples of Anatolia, and a Yörük rug is one woven in that tradition. This one is hand-knotted in wool, multicolored, 126 × 202 cm (4'2" × 6'8"), woven in Türkiye, and second-hand — it had a floor before it had this one.

01How it feels underfoot

Anatolian drawing, and no cotton anywhere in the yarn record. Nomadic weaving is portable weaving, which sets its own rules. Looms that have to be dismantled and carried stay narrow, dye is whatever the season provides, and the drawing is held in the head rather than on paper.

02From the hand of the weaver

What comes off such a loom is a rug where the two halves of a border rarely match exactly and the colors change where one batch of yarn ran out. Read as errors those things are errors; read as a record of how the rug was made, they become the whole interest of it. Wool in the pile and wool underneath it, so the rug is lighter and more flexible in the hand than a cotton-founded one of the same size.

03Color, by the light

Being second-hand, it comes with use already in it: the pile has settled, the surface has taken on the low sheen that only walking produces, and the colors have softened a step from where they started. Wear at the ends and small differences in pile height are part of that and are not faults to be corrected.

04The geography of the weave

First thing to do with any used rug is have it professionally washed. Hand-knotted in Türkiye in the Yörük tradition of the Anatolian nomads. Wool pile and wool foundation; nothing else in the yarn record. Multicolored, with the color changes that come from small dye batches. 126 × 202 cm (4'2" × 6'8"), roughly 2.6 square meters. Second-hand: the pile has settled and the colors have softened. Uneven pile height and end wear are normal in a used rug of this kind. Have it professionally washed before it goes down.

One piece. Nobody wove this expecting it to be looked at in a photograph, which is exactly why it survives being looked at.

Which size fits your room?

The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:

Living room

At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.

Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380

Dining room

It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.

Bedroom

Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.

Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340

Hallway · runner

Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.

Care — three rules

Vacuum regularly

Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.

Treat spills before they dry

Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.

Leave washing to a professional

Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.

Which size should I choose for a living room?

At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.

How long does shipping take, and what does it cost?

Can the rug be used over underfloor heating?

It depends on the pile height. Low-pile woven rugs work with underfloor heating and do not block the heat. If you are unsure, send the product code to Client Services on WhatsApp.

How does the price change between sizes?

Pricing is by the square meter. The price per square meter is shown next to the price, and it updates as you select a size.

Can I see the rug in Ankara?

Can I ask for a size that is not listed?

Custom sizes can be woven in many series. Send your measurements on WhatsApp and we will come back with a production time and a price.
