Red Anatolian Kırşehir Village-Woven Wool Rug Pillow

Red and burgundy are not the same decision. This one is red — the brighter, warmer end of the Anatolian palette — on a Kırşehir pillow face hand-knotted in wool and cotton, with floral figures worked into the geometric drawing. Two lengths: 56 × 119 cm (1'10" × 3'11") and 53 × 117 cm (1'9" × 3'10"). A red ground puts everything else on the piece in a different register. Cream stays cream but reads warmer, and the flowers scattered through the field come forward instead of settling back the way they would on a darker ground.

Anatolian floral work is not botanical — it is a flower described in five or six straight lines, which is what a village loom can draw and what generations of repetition have refined it into.

The house keeps these among its rare pieces. Wool pile over cotton, knotted by hand in Türkiye. Red on wool keeps its depth for a very long time, though the two pieces here already differ a little in tone, which is what happens when dye lots are small and the weaving is done in a house.

03The tone of the ground

Clean it professionally. Has a rug face knotted by hand at Kırşehir, wool worked over a cotton foundation. Uses a red ground rather than burgundy, which lifts the whole drawing. Sets stylized floral figures inside the geometric Anatolian layout. Comes in two lengths, 56 × 119 cm and 53 × 117 cm. Varies slightly in tone between the two, as small dye lots do. Should be cleaned professionally. A red cushion made out of rug behaves nothing like a red cushion made out of cloth, and the difference is entirely in how the light comes off the pile.
