On the surface: Natural, Wool, Silk. The kind of yarn sets the hand of the rug, its shine and what its care asks, all together.
Classic pattern. The motif is built while the rug is woven; there is no layer printed on afterward. There is gray, cream in the ground.
This rug is woven in India. Where a rug is from is read in its knot and its yarn more than in its pattern; that is why the place on the spec sheet matters.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Once a week with a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile, is enough for everyday care.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Burgundy band wide around pale gray, figured in green and cream
The border is the loudest thing here: a deep burgundy band, wide, running right around a light gray field of Oushak drawing. Hand-knotted in India, 168 × 244 cm (5'6" × 8'0"), wool pile on a cotton foundation with silk in the motifs, and green, beige and cream worked into the burgundy itself. Set a dark border against a pale field and the field looks paler and the room looks wider; that is an old device in bordered rugs and it is used plainly here.
Inside the burgundy, the green and cream figures keep the band from going flat — look closely and there is as much drawing in the border as there is in the middle. The gray of the field is light enough to take furniture legs without swallowing them. Cotton warp and weft carry the structure; the pile is wool, and silk is reserved for the motif outlines, where it does the work a highlight does in a drawing.
At 14 by 14 knots the detail holds at the scale of a fingernail. Silk highlights change with the angle of the light, so this rug looks like one thing at one end of a long room and another at the far end, and the burgundy in particular travels from wine toward something nearer brown as the day moves.
Cleaning is a specialist's job. Knotted by hand in India: cotton foundation, wool pile, silk motifs. A wide burgundy border, figured in green, beige and cream, around a light gray field. 14 by 14 knots. 168 × 244 cm (5'6" × 8'0") — sized for a sofa group rather than a hallway. The silk reads bright or matte depending on where you stand. A dark border on a pale ground makes the field look wider than it is. Professional washing only. One piece. It will look best in a room where something else is already burgundy — a chair, a book spine, a curtain — and slightly stranded in a room where nothing is.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
