Gray and Burgundy Oushak Handwoven Silk-Blend Rug, Jaipur Series

The border is the loudest thing here: a deep burgundy band, wide, running right around a light gray field of Oushak drawing. Hand-knotted in India, 168 × 244 cm (5'6" × 8'0"), wool pile on a cotton foundation with silk in the motifs, and green, beige and cream worked into the burgundy itself.

Set a dark border against a pale field and the field looks paler and the room looks wider; that is an old device in bordered rugs and it is used plainly here. Inside the burgundy, the green and cream figures keep the band from going flat — look closely and there is as much drawing in the border as there is in the middle. The gray of the field is light enough to take furniture legs without swallowing them.

Cotton warp and weft carry the structure; the pile is wool, and silk is reserved for the motif outlines, where it does the work a highlight does in a drawing. At 14 by 14 knots the detail holds at the scale of a fingernail. Silk highlights change with the angle of the light, so this rug looks like one thing at one end of a long room and another at the far end, and the burgundy in particular travels from wine toward something nearer brown as the day moves. Cleaning is a specialist's job.
