01Comes from from Pakistan

It measures 86 × 231 cm (2'10" × 7'7"), was knotted in Pakistan, and there is one of it. The drawing is the old western Anatolian Oushak: flowers large enough to read from standing height, arranged along the length rather than around a center, because a runner has no center to speak of.

02Color that shifts through the day

Cream opens the field up between the blooms and keeps the red from closing in. The yarn was dyed by hand rather than in an industrial vat, so no two meters of the ground hold quite the same red: it sinks toward tile at one end and lifts toward rust at the other.

03Coming off the loom

The shift is easiest to see where daylight crosses the pile at an angle. Weavers in Pakistan who work the double knot made it, tying each knot around two warp threads instead of one, which is slower work and the reason the flower outlines stay sharp at this scale.

04What Wool does

Wool makes the whole surface. Below that, cotton does the structural work, helped by a modest amount of synthetic yarn — which the house would rather name than hide. The pile is medium in height and firm rather than soft, and at 86 cm across the rug is narrow enough for the strip of floor between a door and a stair.

Professional washing. Handwoven in Pakistan on the double knot, two warps to a knot. Wool pile. The foundation is cotton, and there is some synthetic yarn in it. Large Oushak flower heads in yellow and orange on red, cream between them. Border in red and gold, running the full length on both sides. Hand-dyed yarn, which is why the red drifts toward brick and rust in places. 86 × 231 cm (2'10" × 7'7") — an entrance, a landing, the run beside a bed. Professional washing. One piece.

06The tone of the ground

It was not made in a run and will not be repeated. A narrow rug in a strong color settles an entrance the way a picture settles a wall, and it takes about as long to notice.
