01Color that shifts through the day

Green is an uncommon ground on an Afghan loom, where madder red usually decides the palette. One piece. The drawing is geometric in the strict sense: straight lines, stepped corners, nothing that curves.

02Coming off the loom

A knotted surface builds every shape out of squares, so a weaver who wants a circle has to approximate one, and this drawing does not try — the forms are resolved into angles and stacked, which is why the pattern stays legible from standing height.

03Which tone on the ground

Green pushes the whole thing cooler than an Afghan rug normally reads. Near a window it goes toward olive; under a warm bulb in the evening it settles closer to moss. Wool takes the entire surface.

04The Cotton on the surface

Beneath it the warp and weft are chiefly cotton, carrying a little synthetic yarn for tensile strength — listed on the label rather than left off it. Each knot is the symmetrical double knot used across Anatolia and still tied in Afghan workshops, wrapped around two warp threads rather than one, so a rug of this area represents months of somebody sitting at a loom.

05Knot by knot, by hand

Nothing was drawn on paper first, and the repeats step out of line here and there. Knotted by hand in Afghanistan, two warp threads to every knot. Wool pile; the structure beneath is chiefly cotton with a little synthetic thread in it. Green ground, angular geometric drawing, no curved forms anywhere in it. 169 × 251 cm (5'7" × 8'3") — a sitting area, a study, or a dining floor for four. Olive in daylight, closer to moss under lamps. Months at the loom, with repeats that step where the weaver worked from memory. Washing is a job for a rug workshop. A single piece, and none other in this coloring. A green rug asks more of a room than a red one does, and pays it back in February, when everything else in the house has gone gray.
