On the surface: Wool, Cotton. The kind of yarn sets the hand of the rug, its shine and what its care asks, all together.
Traditional pattern; the motif edges sit on the order of the warp, so they come out sharp. The ground is beige, cream.
This rug is woven in India. Knowing where a rug comes from is not only a matter of curiosity: yarn, dye and weaving habits change from region to region.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. In a rug in direct sun the color opens unevenly over the years; drawing the curtain halfway or turning the rug now and then prevents that.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Three hundred and ten centimeters across, Oushak drawn in rings
Round rugs stop at about two meters almost everywhere. This one is 310 cm across (10'2"). Cream Oushak Hand-Knotted Round Wool Rug, Sultanahmet Series — a cream ground with light greens through it, Oushak motifs redrawn to fit a circle, knotted by hand in India from wool and cotton. Adapting an Oushak drawing to a round is not a matter of cropping a rectangle.
The borders have to curve, the corner pieces have no corners to sit in, and the central motif has to be genuinely central or the whole thing looks tilted. What comes out of that is a rug organized entirely from the middle outward — bands of pattern working out in rings, in cream with light green running through them.
Under a round table or in the middle of a stair hall it reads as a floor detail rather than as a rectangle someone rounded off. Wool and cotton, tied by hand in India. A circle of this diameter takes months, partly for the size and partly because a curved border has to be counted rather than repeated.
Against a dark floor or dark furniture the cream throws a hard contrast, which is what the piece was drawn for. It is a welcome rug in the literal sense: most large rounds end up in an entrance hall, and this one is big enough to make that hall look intentional.
Have it washed by a specialist, since a round is harder to handle than a rectangle and the edges take the damage first. Hand-knotted in India from natural wool and cotton. 310 cm across (10'2") — a diameter very few round rugs reach. Oushak motifs redrawn to work in rings from the center outward. Cream ground with light greens through the pattern. Months of work; a curved border has to be counted, not repeated. Strong contrast over dark floors and dark furniture. A large entrance hall, a stair hall, or under a round dining table. Professional washing, with attention to the edges.
One piece. Big rounds are rare because they are difficult, and difficult is most of what you are looking at here.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
