The story of this rug

An Oushak flower, redrawn: the old western Anatolian floral has been opened out and simplified here, and it covers the field of a hand-knotted cream wool rug measuring 250 × 345 cm (8'2" × 11'4").

01How it feels underfoot

Wool pile on a cotton foundation, with viscose used in the motifs, knotted in India. Cream, beige, mink and gold-yellow, and nothing louder than that. The palette is the argument. Four close tones are laid over one another so the pattern emerges by degrees rather than announcing itself, and the effect is closer to an English chintz than to a village rug — flowers on a light ground, drawn small, repeating without a strict axis.

The frame runs quietly around the whole thing. Viscose appears only inside the blossoms, where it catches light against the matt wool and gives each flower an edge it would not otherwise have.

02Color, by the light

Beside cream or coffee-toned upholstery the ground disappears into the room and the drawing is all that is left. Knotted by hand in India, on a cotton foundation, over several months. The knot count is high, which is the reason the small floral detail resolves at all — at a coarser count these flowers would turn into smudges.

03What the yarn is

Cotton warps and wefts keep a rug of this size lying flat and square; wool takes the wear on the surface; viscose does nothing structural and is there for the light. A piece this large will need a professional wash rather than any spot treatment, and the more even the wear the better it will age. Hand-knotted in India, over several months at the loom. Wool pile, viscose worked into the motifs, cotton warp and weft. 250 × 345 cm (8'2" × 11'4") — a very large piece for an open living or dining room. Modernized Oushak floral in cream, beige, mink and gold-yellow. A high knot count, which is what keeps the small flowers legible. The viscose gives a low sheen inside the blossoms only. Professional washing when it needs it. It is a quiet rug that gets less quiet the longer you look at it, which is the opposite of how most large patterned rugs behave.

Which size fits your room?

The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:

Living room

At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.

Dining room

It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.

Bedroom

Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.

Hallway · runner

Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.

Care — three rules

Vacuum regularly

Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.

Treat spills before they dry

Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.

Leave washing to a professional

Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.

Which size should I choose for a living room?

At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.

How long does shipping take, and what does it cost?

Can the rug be used over underfloor heating?

It depends on the pile height. Low-pile woven rugs work with underfloor heating and do not block the heat. If you are unsure, send the product code to Client Services on WhatsApp.

How does the price change between sizes?

Pricing is by the square meter. The price per square meter is shown next to the price, and it updates as you select a size.
