Gray Abstract Machine-Woven Cotton-Viscose Rug, Tibet Series

There is no motif on it, no medallion and no border. A machine-woven rug from the Tibet series in cotton and viscose, made in Türkiye, mottled gray shading toward mink-brown, with the composition built out of nothing but changes in density — pale at the middle, deeper toward the edges. The model is TB 02 GREY.

The surface behaves like a weathered wall, or like the mark water leaves on stone. Where two tones meet there is no line at all, which sounds like the easy option and is the opposite: an unbroken gradient means the loom is mixing two yarns in proportions that shift a fraction at a time, and if the proportion jumps the transition breaks into visible bands. Viscose deepens the effect on its own account, throwing light back at some angles and swallowing it at others, so the same patch of gray reads pale from one side of a room and dark from the other. The pattern is not fixed. Cotton is the part holding the structure together.

Because the tones run in every direction the rug reads the same from every side; lay it whichever way suits the room. What it is not is a universal neutral. The mink-brown in the mix pulls it to the warm side of gray, so it settles beside beige, sand and cinnamon and can sit awkwardly in a room built on ice-blue and cold gray. Viscose loses strength when it is wet, so a spill is lifted with a dry cloth and not washed at, and use a plain head on the vacuum.
