On the surface: Natural, Wool. The kind of yarn sets the hand of the rug, its shine and what its care asks, all together.
Authentic pattern. The ground and the motif are not parts of separate processes but of the same weave; the two advance together.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. We write down where it comes from, because we want to be able to name the workshop when someone asks.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. What wears a rug down over the years is not a stain but the dust that settles at the base of the pile and grinds the fibers from inside with every step.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Kırşehir's rose in red wool, a pillow at 56 × 110 cm
The rose is the point. Kırşehir weaving in central Anatolia is known for a rose figure, drawn in knots and therefore squared off at every curve, and this piece carries it in red on a wool pile over a cotton foundation.
It measures 56 × 110 cm (1'10" × 3'7") and is made up as a pillow face. One only. A knotted rose is a strange object to look at closely. Nothing about the flower is round — the petals arrive as small stepped blocks, the stem is a stack of three or four knots, and the eye assembles the rest.
Kırşehir weavers have been drawing it that way for generations, in reds against darker reds with a little cream to give the edges somewhere to end. At this size the figures are large in proportion to the piece, so the pattern reads as one flower rather than a field of them. The surface is wool; underneath, the warp and weft are cotton. A Türkiye piece, tied knot by knot. The oblong shape is the giveaway that this began as rug weaving rather than as a cushion: at 56 by 110 cm it is a rug proportion, not a cushion proportion, and it has been finished as a pillow face afterward.
A wool pile makes a firm cushion rather than a soft one, and it wants a backing cloth behind it if the insert is going to be used rather than looked at. Hand-knotted in wool in the Kırşehir manner, central Türkiye. Wool pile knotted over a cotton warp and weft. The Kırşehir rose, stepped rather than curved, in red with cream edging. 56 × 110 cm (1'10" × 3'7") — a long bolster shape, not a square cushion. Cut and finished from village rug weaving, which is why the proportion is oblong. Knotted pile gives a firm cushion; a fabric backing protects the weave. Professional washing; do not put it through a household machine. A single face, and no second one to match it. Set against plain linen it does the work a small painting would do, at a fraction of the wall.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
