Authentic pattern. The ground and the motif are not parts of separate processes but of the same weave; the two advance together. The ground tone is red.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. We write down where it comes from, because we want to be able to name the workshop when someone asks.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. What wears a rug down over the years is not a stain but the dust that settles at the base of the pile and grinds the fibers from inside with every step.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.

Think of it as a small rug given a different job: a hand-knotted red wool pillow cover, 62 × 107 cm (2'0" × 3'6"), made up from a village weaving at İnlice in Konya province, with Anatolian figures across the face. It came out of a dowry chest. There is one. Sixty-two by a hundred and seven is wide for a bolster and long for a cushion, and what it actually suits is a bench, a window seat or the back of a daybed — anywhere a rectangle of pile can lean against something rather than be sat on directly.
A knotted face is thicker and warmer to the hand than a flat one, and it holds its figures in relief, so this reads as an object with a front rather than as a piece of cloth. Wool, knotted by hand in central Türkiye, then made up as a cover. İnlice weaving is village work, which is to say the figures were held in memory and set out by eye, and the drawing accordingly drifts: a motif near one end will be a knot or two wider than its twin at the other.
That drift is the piece's signature and the reason a photograph of one is not a photograph of another. Nothing here is repeatable — it came from one weaving, and that weaving is used up. Wool, knotted by hand at İnlice, Konya province, Türkiye. 62 × 107 cm (2'0" × 3'6"), backed and finished as a cover. Knotted pile, so the figures sit in relief and the face has weight. Suits a bench, a window seat or the back of a daybed. Figures drift by a knot or two between one end and the other. Came from a dowry chest rather than from a floor. Professional cleaning. One piece, from a weaving that no longer exists. The rug it was cut from is gone, and this is the part somebody decided was worth keeping.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
