Multicolor Anatolian Hand-Knotted Wool Taşpınar Rug

Aksaray province, out on the central Anatolian plateau, has a village called Taşpınar whose name has served as a rug description for generations. This is one of them: hand-knotted in wool, multicolored, drawn in the angular Anatolian manner those looms keep to, and measuring 183 × 272 cm (6'0" × 8'11"). A single piece.

Rengarenk is the word on the Turkish label and it means precisely what it looks like — many colors, none of them selected to agree with the others. Reds, blues and greens stand side by side at full strength. Where one dye lot ran out partway up the rug the tone steps, and that horizontal banding has a name: abrash. It is what tells you the yarn was dyed in small batches at home rather than bought by the sack.

Wool throughout, surface and foundation alike, knotted by hand in Türkiye. No cartoon was involved — the drawing lived in the weaver's head, so the figures shift by a knot or two as the work climbs, and over nine feet that drift accumulates until the two ends of the rug are visibly not identical. They were never meant to be. If what you want is a rug that measures true to the millimeter, this is the wrong one. Professional cleaning only; a wool-on-wool village rug is no machine proposition.
