Wool ages over the years by settling into its place rather than by losing its shine. Used, it softens rather than hardens.
Authentic pattern. The motif is built row by row as the weaving advances; it is only seen whole once it comes off the loom. The ground color is colorful.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. The place of production is written on the spec sheet; it comes straight from the workshop that wove it, with no reseller chain.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. For everyday care use a head without a beater bar and follow the direction of the pile; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Mostly empty blue and cream, the banding held to the center
Most of this rug is empty. A plain blue-and-cream ground takes up the bulk of the field, the pattern is concentrated into a banded panel down the middle, and a navy-and-red border closes it. This is a Sivas Zara wool rug of the Anadolu Şal series, 121 × 182 cm (4'0" × 6'0"), made by hand in Anatolia from first-grade wool. Inside that central panel the Zara motifs are laid in horizontal registers of orange, green, red and purple, worked at full intensity — and the quiet ground around them is what lets that intensity read as design rather than as noise.
The arrangement makes it the calmest piece in the series without making it a plain rug. In a small sitting area, beside a bed, or in a corner kept for reading, it gives a room character without asking the room to reorganize itself. Master weavers in different parts of Anatolia make these, by hand, over months of patient work. First-grade wool accounts for the softness underfoot, the natural shine and the durability.
Centuries-old motifs have been reinterpreted here rather than copied, which is what the series does and what the house says it does. Because it was woven by hand the edges are not ruled and the panel is not perfectly centered.
Only a professional wash. Made by hand by master women weavers in several parts of Anatolia. A first-grade wool yarn — soft underfoot, and long-wearing. 121 × 182 cm (4'0" × 6'0") — a small sitting area, a bedside, a reading corner. A banded Sivas Zara panel through the middle, on a plain blue-and-cream ground. Orange, green, red and purple in the panel; navy and red in the outer border. The quietest arrangement in the series, and still not a plain rug. Edges and centering are approximate, as hand weaving makes them. A single piece.
Professional washing only. Restraint is unusual in this series, and it is what will make this one easy to live with for a long time.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
