Modern pattern. The motif is built row by row as the weaving advances; it is only seen whole once it comes off the loom. The ground color is gray.
This rug is woven in India. The place of production is written on the spec sheet; it comes straight from the workshop that wove it, with no reseller chain.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. For everyday care use a head without a beater bar and follow the direction of the pile; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Pastel flecks through gray-mink, thirteen square meters of it
It reads as terrazzo from standing height — pink, blue-gray and terracotta flecks scattered fine and even through a gray-mink ground, in the way a poured floor holds its chips. Gray-Mink Pastel Abstract Hand-Knotted Wool Rug, Aren Series, with viscose through the flecks, 305 × 427 cm (10'0" × 14'0"), knotted by hand in India. One of one. The color never collects.
It is spread deliberately over the whole surface, which keeps the rug calm without letting it go monotonous, and the pinks and blues take turns being visible depending on where the light is. Every tone in it is pastel, so a field with six colors rests the eye instead of working it.
At thirteen square meters it is the floor of a large salon or a dining room, and in a plain white or cream space it needs no help. Put it beside pale marble, or an actual terrazzo top, and the resemblance stops being a comparison. Wool holds the body and the matt of the surface; viscose carries the flecks, which is where the small shift of brightness comes from as you cross the room.
The knotting is dense and even, and on a piece this large that is what keeps the color balance and the shape from drifting over the years. Months of work per rug, by weavers in India. Aren is the name for the single grain of sand that catches most light in a desert, and on a field this plain that describes exactly what the flecks are doing.
Wipe and vacuum between times; a full wash is for a professional. Knotted by hand in India across months, in wool with viscose. 305 × 427 cm (10'0" × 14'0") — thirteen square meters, for a large salon or dining room. Pink, blue-gray and terracotta flecks distributed evenly through a gray-mink ground. All tones pastel, so a many-colored field still reads as quiet. Viscose puts a slight glitter into the flecks; wool keeps the surface matt. Dense, even knotting — what holds shape and color balance on a rug this wide. Short production runs; this piece exists once. Wipe and vacuum; a full wash by a professional. Terrazzo was invented out of offcuts, and a rug that borrows the look from it has better manners than most large abstracts.
A long look at the surface, the edge finish and the sizes.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
