01Up close to the pattern

The ground is dark brown, with pink and terracotta surfacing through the pattern. A single piece. A compartment field is an old arrangement and a disciplined one: nothing floats, everything is held.

02Color, by the light

Color is what keeps it from looking severe. Pink and terracotta appear irregularly through the brown, in the way a rug that has spent decades in a sunny room fades unevenly and keeps its life anyway.

03Where it is laid

Beside dark wood, leather and copper it is warm and formal at once. In a plain beige room it is the only depth on the floor, and that turns out to be enough. Wool carries the brown and the warmth; silk goes into the pattern, where it raises the red notes and makes them look brighter than the dye alone would manage.

04The mark of slow weaving

Both are knotted by hand in Pakistan, doubled, at a density that lets the rug take a hallway's worth of traffic without the color flattening out. Months of work per piece. Not every Ayan design is available outside this house.
