On the surface: Natural, Wool. The shine of the rug, its weight and what its care asks all follow from that choice.
Authentic pattern; the motif is built from the yarn itself, not from dye. It does not rub away as the surface wears.
This rug is made in Türkiye. Writing the place of production onto the spec sheet also makes clear where the price comes from.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Turning the rug a hundred and eighty degrees once a year spreads the load of sunlight and foot traffic evenly across the surface.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Seventy-eight centimeters wide, orange, dyed from roots
Eighty years old by the house's reckoning, and sold with a certificate for its plant dyes: a hand-knotted orange wool rug from Antep in southeastern Türkiye, 78 × 165 cm (2'7" × 5'5"), with Anatolian figures across an orange ground. One of one. Eighty years puts it in the band the trade calls semi-antique, which runs from fifty to a hundred years.
Those bands are trade usage and nothing more — no authority issues them, no register records them, and a dealer reading age off wear and color is offering a judgment rather than a date. What is documented here is the color. Kök boya is the Turkish for dye taken from roots and plants, and the certificate that comes with this rug states that the color in it was made that way rather than in a synthetic bath. Plant dye is identifiable without paperwork once you know what to look for.
It does not hold one exact value across a field, because two diggings of the same root give two slightly different strengths, and the difference appears as horizontal bands of tone. It also ages by growing quieter instead of going gray. Orange is the hardest of these colors to keep, and eighty years have settled this one somewhere between apricot and rust depending on where the light falls.
Wool throughout, knotted by hand. Keep it away from an afternoon window, because sunlight is what takes plant color. What does a natural dye certificate cover? It records that the colors in the rug were made from plant sources rather than synthetic ones.
It is a statement about the dyestuff, not about the age or the region of the rug, and it does not come from a government body. How old is a semi-antique rug? Between fifty and a hundred years, in the trade's own usage.
Antique means a hundred years or more, and vintage covers roughly twenty to eighty. No authority issues these categories, so they describe a dealer's judgment rather than a documented date. Hand-knotted in wool at Antep, southeastern Türkiye. 78 × 165 cm (2'7" × 5'5"), a narrow rug for a passage or a bedside. Around eighty years old — semi-antique in trade usage, which no authority issues. Sold with a certificate for its kök boya, its plant dyes. An orange that reads apricot in one light and rust in another. Horizontal banding where the dye strength differed between lots. Sunlight is what takes plant color; keep it clear of an afternoon window. Washing by someone who handles natural dyes.
One piece. Synthetic color of the same age would look tired by now, and this is what the alternative looks like after the same eighty years.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
