On the surface: Natural, Wool. The same pattern woven in another yarn becomes another rug; the difference shows at the first touch.
Authentic pattern. Because the pattern comes from inside the weave, it can be followed from the back as well.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. It comes straight from the workshop with no reseller layer; the place on the spec sheet and the place it was woven are the same.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. A pad laid underneath holds the rug in place and stops it rubbing against the floor; besides preventing sliding it also extends its life.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Keçi Muhsine: red wool, dye lifted from plants
Keçi Muhsine is the name this rug carries, and the house does not translate it — which is the right call. It is hand-knotted wool, red, 117 × 192 cm (3'10" × 6'4"), colored with kök boya and drawn in the Anatolian repertoire.
Made in Türkiye, and there is one of it. Red from a plant and red from a synthetic bath are two different objects. The synthetic version holds a single value across a whole field and stays there; the plant version arrives in slightly different strengths from batch to batch, so the field carries faint horizontal bands, and it moves toward brown rather than toward pink as it ages. Look along the rug rather than down at it and the bands appear.
Look down and mostly they do not. Wool, knotted by hand in Türkiye. The house also files this piece under seccade, among its prayer rugs, and the proportion supports that — a little under two meters long and a little over a meter wide is the size a single person kneels on.
Used that way or not, it is a size that works: too small to need a room built round it, large enough not to look lost. Plant dye and strong sun are a bad combination over years rather than months, so keep it off the brightest patch of floor. Hand-knotted in wool in Türkiye. 117 × 192 cm (3'10" × 6'4") — a prayer-rug proportion, and the house lists it as one. Colored with kök boya, dye taken from plants. Faint horizontal banding where the dye strength changed between batches. Plant red ages toward brown rather than toward pink. Anatolian drawing across the field. Keep it out of the brightest floor light. Professional washing.
One of one. A rug this size ends up somewhere different every few years, and it is the kind that looks intentional in all of them.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
