The story of this rug

Madder root for the reds and indigo for the blues: kök boya is the Turkish term for dye taken from plants, and this kilim is colored with it. Handwoven wool, Anatolian in drawing, from Van in the far east of Türkiye, 158 × 208 cm (5'2" × 6'10"), and there is one. Plant dye behaves differently from the synthetic kind in a way anyone can see. It does not sit at one exact value — madder from two different diggings gives two slightly different reds, and the difference stays visible in the finished piece as horizontal banding, which the trade calls abrash.

01The air of the room

It also ages by going quieter rather than by going gray, so a naturally dyed kilim at fifty years old looks like a softer version of itself instead of a faded one. The drawing carrying that color is the eastern Anatolian repertoire: stepped and hooked geometry, a strong border, and several color fields rather than one. Van lies on the eastern lake of the same name, about as far from the Aegean workshops as Anatolian weaving goes.

02What Wool does

A flatweave asks for a wool that will pack hard under the beater without felting, and that is the demand this construction makes of the fiber. The house lists the piece among its older and rarer stock, and it carries the slight crookedness and softening that go with that. What natural dye cannot do is take strong sunlight indefinitely, so keep it off the patch of floor that gets four hours of afternoon sun.

03To make it last

Clean it through a specialist who knows plant dyes, since some solvents will move them. One of one. Handwoven in wool in Van, eastern Türkiye. Colored with kök boya — plant dyes, madder for red and indigo for blue. 158 × 208 cm (5'2" × 6'10"), one piece. Abrash banding is the signature of dye lots that were never identical. Eastern Anatolian geometry: stepped and hooked forms inside a firm border. Plant color fades in direct sun; keep it out of a hot afternoon window. An older piece, carrying the softening that goes with age. Cleaning by a specialist who knows plant dyes. Plant dye goes on changing after the loom is finished with it, which is the reason old kilims look better than new ones.

Which size fits your room?

The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:

Living room

At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.

It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.

Care — three rules

Vacuum regularly

Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.

Treat spills before they dry

Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.

Leave washing to a professional

Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.

Which size should I choose for a living room?

At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.

Can the rug be used over underfloor heating?

It depends on the pile height. Low-pile woven rugs work with underfloor heating and do not block the heat. If you are unsure, send the product code to Client Services on WhatsApp.

Pricing is by the square meter. The price per square meter is shown next to the price, and it updates as you select a size.
