Multicolor Anatolian Handwoven Wool Kilim Runner

A runner ninety centimeters wide and two meters sixty-eight long: 90 × 268 cm (2'11" × 8'10"), about 2.4 square meters (26 square feet), with multicolored wool tufts tied to the fringe. Handwoven in Türkiye, wool throughout, in the pattern language of the kilims known in Denizli as Çalçırpı. The surface is divided into colored rectangular panels instead of one ground: lavender, orange, pistachio green, burgundy and red, with cream bands between them.

01Where the Medallion comes from

Each panel holds a large hooked medallion, and fine comb-like lines reach from the panel edges into the cream. The horizontal bands between the panels carry black and cream zigzags. In the literature on Anatolian weaving, the hook is associated with warding off the evil eye.

02The tone of the ground

In a kilim, where two colors meet, the weft can only climb in steps, so every hook and tooth is drawn in small stairs. The colors jump from panel to panel, but the same five return along the whole length, so the runner never looks scattered; the eye moves from orange to lavender to green as it travels. A sandık eskisi: an older piece, kept in a chest and never put underfoot.

03When you walk in

In a hallway at least 130 cm wide it leaves 20 cm of floor on each side. Keep the walls plain and pale beside this much color: a lime-white wall and natural oak bring the panels forward, and a single orange or green object at the end of the hall repeats the pattern there. A narrow column runs along one long side, where smaller panels follow their own order; their colors do not line up with the main panels beside them.
