On the surface: Wool. The kind of yarn sets the hand of the rug, its shine and what its care asks, all together.
Authentic pattern. The motif is built while the rug is woven; there is no layer printed on afterward. There is colorful in the ground.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. Where a rug is from is read in its knot and its yarn more than in its pattern; that is why the place on the spec sheet matters.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Once a week with a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile, is enough for everyday care.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Denizli Çalçırpı kilim, wool throughout, ninety centimeters wide
Ninety centimeters across and two hundred and sixty-eight long — 90 × 268 cm (2'11" × 8'10") — which makes this a runner before it is anything else. A handwoven wool kilim from Denizli in the Çalçırpı manner, multicolored, old enough that the trade files it as sandık eskisi.
Flat-woven: no pile, no knots, and a face on both sides. A kilim is built by weft alone. Colored wefts are beaten down across the warp until the warp disappears entirely, and where two colors meet the weaver either interlocks them or leaves a small vertical slit, which is why kilim motifs step diagonally instead of curving. The result is a textile a few millimeters thick with the same drawing on the reverse.
In Anatolia these were floor covers, wall hangings, storage sacks and dowry goods by turns, and the narrow proportion of this one belongs to the passage rather than the room. Wool, and only wool, according to the yarn record.
A flatweave has nothing to cushion a hard floor, so a runner like this wants an underlay if it is going onto stone or tile — otherwise it will slide, and the edges will curl at the ends. What it gives back is thickness: at a few millimeters it will pass under a door that a knotted rug would jam. Colors this old were set with plant dyes and they can move in water, so treat a spill dry and send the piece to a kilim washer for anything more. Handwoven wool kilim from Denizli, in the Çalçırpı manner. Weft-faced flatweave — no pile, no knots, the pattern visible on both faces. Motifs step diagonally, which is what slit-weave construction requires. 90 × 268 cm (2'11" × 8'10"), about 2.4 square meters of runner. Thin enough to pass under a door; use an underlay on stone or tile. Sandık eskisi — stored rather than used, so the wear is minimal. Treat spills dry; professional cleaning only.
One piece. A runner takes more foot traffic than anything else on a floor, and this one arrives with its pile still to spend.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
