Full description

Kirmen is the Turkish word for a hand spindle, and it appears on this rug's label because the yarn was spun on one — twisted by hand rather than drawn off a mill frame, so the thickness wanders and the pile catches light unevenly. Hand-knotted at Ortaköy in wool, seventy years old, 109 × 150 cm (3'7" × 4'11").

Yellow leads the palette, which is unusual in Anatolian weaving and is what makes this one recognizable across a room. It is not a lemon yellow but the ochre end of the range, with reds and browns worked around it and the darker tones pushed to the border. Where the spindle-spun yarn is thicker the color sits heavier, so the field has a faint mottling that no evenly spun wool produces.

The other phrase on the label is sandık eskisi: it came out of a chest rather than off a floor, having been woven, folded and put away. At seventy years it falls inside the semi-antique band the trade uses for pieces between fifty and a hundred years old — a usage with no issuing authority. Hand-spun yarn makes for an irregular surface, and if you want an even one, that is the reason to pass. The wash goes out.

What is kirmen wool?

Kirmen is a hand spindle, and kirmen wool is yarn spun on one. It varies in thickness along its length in a way that machine-spun yarn does not, which gives the finished pile a slightly uneven surface and makes the dye take at different strengths from one section to the next.

Does hand-spun yarn make a weaker rug?

No. Hand-spun wool is generally spun with a looser twist and a longer staple than mill yarn, which makes the pile feel softer and take dye more deeply. The irregularity is visual rather than structural, and rugs built this way have lasted a century and more.

Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.

Treat spills before they dry

Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.

Leave washing to a professional

Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.

At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.

Can the rug be used over underfloor heating?

It depends on the pile height. Low-pile woven rugs work with underfloor heating and do not block the heat. If you are unsure, send the product code to Client Services on WhatsApp.

How does the price change between sizes?

Pricing is by the square meter. The price per square meter is shown next to the price, and it updates as you select a size.
