The surface uses Wool, Silk. How a rug will feel is set first by the yarn, not by the pattern.
Traditional pattern. The motif is built row by row as the weaving advances; it is only seen whole once it comes off the loom. The ground color is beige, brown.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. The place of production is written on the spec sheet; it comes straight from the workshop that wove it, with no reseller chain.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. For everyday care use a head without a beater bar and follow the direction of the pile; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Silhouettes in beige, a dark brown frame giving them their edge
The motifs come up like silhouettes rather than drawings, present but only just: a beige hand-knotted wool rug of 257 × 185 cm (8'5" × 6'1"), knotted in Anatolia, the pile wool and the silk used sparingly, its faint Oushak figures framed by a brown border that supplies all the contrast the piece needs.
One of one. Two tones do the whole job. The beige field holds figures barely a shade darker than the ground, which is why they read as shapes from a distance and resolve into Oushak drawing only up close.
Around them the brown border is dense and unambiguous, and the jump between the two is what gives the rug depth on a floor. In a small room the pale field pushes the walls outward while the dark frame keeps it from looking washed out. Made by hand in Anatolia.
Wool fills the field and a little silk carries the fine work, tied closely enough that the faint drawing does not turn to mush. A design this restrained depends entirely on the knot count: at a lower one the silhouettes would disappear and what remained would be a plain beige rectangle with a brown edge.
Handwork at this level is getting scarce in Türkiye, and rugs of it are increasingly bought as objects rather than as floor coverings. Professional cleaning holds the two tones apart. Made by hand in Anatolia; the pile is wool, and the silk is sparing. 257 × 185 cm (8'5" × 6'1") — a wide room or a long seating arrangement. Beige field with faint Oushak figures, close to the ground in tone. A dark brown border supplies the contrast and the depth. Close knotting; the restraint of the drawing depends on it. The pale field opens a small room, and the frame stops it looking washed out. Natural alongside wood-grained furniture. Professional cleaning.
One piece. Quiet rugs are harder to weave than loud ones, and this is the quiet kind.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
