Cream Framed Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

At 81 × 145 cm (2'8" × 4'9") this is a small rug, and the drawing was scaled to suit it: Cream Framed Hand-Knotted Wool Rug, tied in Pakistan in wool and viscose, with a narrow classic border closing a cream field of fine motifs.

01Up close to the pattern

Small enough for a bedside or a doorway, and worked at a level of detail a large rug could not carry. The border is the whole structure. A thin frame runs the perimeter and gathers the field inward, and inside it the motifs are drawn small and soft-edged, so they emerge rather than announce themselves.

02Color, by the light

Cream is a difficult ground because it registers every shadow, and on a rug this size the shadows move: on a wood floor in the afternoon the field is nearly white, and by evening it has gone the color of unbleached linen.

03Knot by knot, by hand

The viscose in the yarn catches whatever light there is and gives the surface a low shine that wool alone would not. Knotted by hand in Pakistan, where classical Anatolian and Persian drawings have been woven for the export trade over generations.

04From ground to pile

Wool gives the pile its body; viscose gives it the sheen and, being the cooler of the two fibers, the touch underfoot. It is not a rug for a hallway — a pale ground at this size takes the traffic of a whole house through one narrow strip.

05Coming off the loom

Only a professional washer should take water to it. Hand-knotted in Pakistan in wool and viscose. A narrow classic border frames a cream field of fine motifs.
