On the surface: Cotton, Wool, Viscose. The kind of yarn sets the hand of the rug, its shine and what its care asks, all together.
Traditional pattern. The ground and the motif are not parts of separate processes but of the same weave; the two advance together. The ground tone is cream.
This rug is woven in India. We write down where it comes from, because we want to be able to name the workshop when someone asks.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. What wears a rug down over the years is not a stain but the dust that settles at the base of the pile and grinds the fibers from inside with every step.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Mink and gold on cream, the flowers drawn like a botanical plate
The flower drawing looks more like an English botanical plate than an Anatolian rug motif, which is what happens when Oushak patterns are redrawn for a modern room. A hand-knotted runner from India, 84 × 197 cm (2'9" × 6'6"), cream and beige with mink and gold, wool surface, viscose motifs, cotton foundation. One piece. Inside the frame the flowers are drawn stem by stem rather than as a repeating block, and they are worked small — this is a rug you notice while standing at one end of a hall, not while crossing it.
Gold picks out the outlines; mink shades the field between them. Against cream and brown furniture the whole thing settles in almost invisibly, which is the point of a runner and the reason most of them fail. Wool takes the surface, viscose takes the motifs and the shine that comes with them, and cotton takes the foundation.
Knot density here is high, and that is the only reason a stem this thin can be drawn in pile at all. Long narrow rugs are the ones most likely to shift on a hard floor, and one this length is worth anchoring. Washing is a job for a workshop. Knotted by hand in India, with a wool surface over cotton and viscose motifs. 84 × 197 cm (2'9" × 6'6") — a hallway, a landing, or beside a bed. Cream and beige with mink and gold in the drawing. Modernized Oushak flowers, drawn stem by stem inside a running frame. A high knot count is what makes stems this fine possible in pile. Suits cream and brown furniture, and disappears politely against it. Professional washing. One piece. It will spend its life being walked over by people who never look down, and for a hallway rug that is a compliment.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
