On the surface: Wool, Silk. The same pattern woven in another yarn becomes another rug; the difference shows at the first touch.
Traditional pattern; the motif edges sit on the order of the warp, so they come out sharp. The ground is cream.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. Knowing where a rug comes from is not only a matter of curiosity: yarn, dye and weaving habits change from region to region.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. In a rug in direct sun the color opens unevenly over the years; drawing the curtain halfway or turning the rug now and then prevents that.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Cream gone yellow, and silk taking the flower work
Two meters by nearly three: 207 × 277 cm (6'9" × 9'1") of cream ground with flowers moving across it and a wide frame holding them in. A hand-knotted wool rug from Anatolia, with silk taking a share of the pattern, in a cream that runs toward yellow over beige and brown.
One piece. Flowers arranged this way do not march. They lean and turn, so the field has movement in it while staying symmetrical overall, and the wide frame around them is where the drawing gets dense.
The cream carries a little yellow, which is why the rug looks warm under north light instead of going gray on it, and the beige and brown of the border settle it onto a wooden floor with no visible join. Anatolian hand work throughout, wool for the ground with silk sharing the pattern, packed closely enough that a flower keeps its outline at close range and the wide border does not blur into a band.
Hand-knotting at this size takes months and is done by fewer weavers in Türkiye each year. This is a light-ground rug for a room where people take their shoes off, and a household that does not will find that out within a season.
Cleaning is a job for professionals. Anatolian hand work; wool, with silk taking a share of the pattern. 207 × 277 cm (6'9" × 9'1") — a full living room. Cream tending toward yellow, with beige and brown in the border. Oushak flowers arranged loosely inside a wide, densely drawn frame. Close knotting; the outlines hold at close range. Warm under north light, where a cool cream would go gray. A pale ground, and best in a shoes-off room. Professional cleaning.
One piece. It is the rug people start calling "the old one" about four years after buying it, which is a compliment to the drawing.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
