01The Wool on the surface

Handwoven in India, 171 × 256 cm (5'7" × 8'5"), cream ground, light gold borders, brown and beige through the field, in wool, cotton and bamboo viscose. Gold in the border is what balances it.

02The tone of the ground

Without that line the brown and beige on cream would be a study in neutrals; with it there is a warm edge running the perimeter that pulls the whole thing toward evening light. The bamboo viscose in the motifs picks the same warmth up, so border and pattern shine together while the ground stays matte between them. Wool for durability, cotton for a foundation that holds tension, bamboo viscose for the silky finish in the drawing — that division is standard in this class of Indian weaving, and it is why a rug like this can be soft and hard-wearing at once.
