On the surface: Wool, Silk. The shine of the rug, its weight and what its care asks all follow from that choice.
Traditional pattern. Because the pattern comes from inside the weave, it can be followed from the back as well. Built on a cream ground.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. It comes straight from the workshop with no reseller layer; the place on the spec sheet and the place it was woven are the same.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. A pad laid underneath holds the rug in place and stops it rubbing against the floor; besides preventing sliding it also extends its life.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Mirrored border, and the silk goes where the light does
It has the look of something handed down through a family rather than something bought: a cream and yellow hand-knotted wool rug of 198 × 279 cm (6'6" × 9'2"), knotted in Anatolia, wool with silk in the passages that catch light, flowers across the field and a wide border drawn in mirror symmetry.
One piece. The warmth in the cream is a yellow undertone, and in a room that gets direct sun the floor throws some of that back into the space, so the rug makes a bright room look larger. That is the practical case for a pale ground.
Around the field the border is drawn symmetrically, the same figures answering each other across both axes, and the discipline of that arrangement is what keeps a loose floral field from looking scattered. It was made knot by knot in Anatolia, the ground wool and the brighter passages silk, at a close count that supplies both the softness underfoot and the years of wear.
Beige, brown and yellow move through one another rather than sitting in blocks. This is a rug for a classically furnished room, an entrance hall or a bedroom, and it will look out of key in a space built entirely from steel and glass. Professional cleaning, and no home shampoo. Woven knot by knot in Anatolia; wool, with silk where the light needs catching. 198 × 279 cm (6'6" × 9'2") — a large living room or a hall. Cream with a yellow undertone, over beige and brown transitions. Floral field inside a wide border drawn in mirror symmetry. Close knotting: softness underfoot and long wear from the same construction. Returns daylight and makes a bright room read larger. Suits classical rooms, and sits badly with steel and glass. Professional cleaning only.
One piece. Somebody will inherit this one, and they will not be able to tell which decade it was made in.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
