Cream Geometric Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

At 95 × 150 cm (3'1" × 4'11") this is a small rug — a bedside, a doorway, the floor in front of a chair — hand-knotted in India in cream, with gray, black and beige lines running across it. Cotton, bamboo viscose and viscose make the surface soft; wool through them is what makes it last.

01After the color

There is one. Straight lines in three values on a cream ground, spaced to give a small format some rhythm instead of a picture. In daylight the ground picks up a natural sheen from the viscose and shifts toward bone; in the evening it warms, and the gray lines soften into the beige ones.

02From the hand of the weaver

Because there is no medallion and no direction to the drawing, the rug can be laid either way round, which matters more in a small piece than in a large one. Loop by loop, this one was knotted in India.

03The Wool on the surface

The fiber mix does two separate jobs: the softness and the faint luster come from cotton, bamboo viscose and viscose, and the wool worked in among them is what stops a soft rug from flattening.
