On the surface: Wool. The same pattern woven in another yarn becomes another rug; the difference shows at the first touch.
Traditional pattern. The motif is built while the rug is woven; there is no layer printed on afterward. There is cream in the ground.
This rug is woven in India. Where a rug is from is read in its knot and its yarn more than in its pattern; that is why the place on the spec sheet matters.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Once a week with a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile, is enough for everyday care.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Named Feshane, after an Ottoman mill: ivory drifting to beige
The drawing has a name of its own — Feshane, after the Ottoman imperial mill on the Golden Horn — and it is a frame pattern: a burgundy border around a cream field of fine branches and small flowers.
A hand-knotted wool rug, tied tightly enough that the motifs hold their edges, on a ground that is not one cream but ivory shading into warm beige. The field never gets crowded. Branches move across it at an even pace and the flowers sit at the joints, so the composition stays orderly instead of busy. The burgundy frame does the opposite job: it is solid, wide and dark, and it throws the pale field forward.
Set against carved and patinated furniture, embroidered seat covers and velvet, the rug reads as part of the same century as the room. In a large space it can carry the floor on its own. Months of hand-knotting went into it and the density is the point — a tight back means motifs that stay sharp and a pile that resists crushing where people walk the same line every day.
The wool surface is firm rather than plush, and it gives back a sense of solidity underfoot instead of sinking. Kept clean and rotated, it will hold both its shape and the balance of its colors for a long time.
What it will not do is suit a minimal room; it is a formal rug and it behaves like one. Hand-knotted over months in wool, at a high knot density. Ivory-to-beige cream field with a wide burgundy frame. Fine branch and flower drawing, evenly spaced across the field. The drawing carries the Feshane name, from the Ottoman imperial mill. A firm, dense surface underfoot rather than a soft one. Built for a formal room — it will look out of place in a spare one. Rotate it periodically and have it professionally cleaned. It belongs on a large floor with heavy furniture on it, and it will make that furniture look better than it is.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
