Cream Frame-Pattern Handwoven Wool Rug, Feshane Series

Feshane was an Ottoman imperial textile works in İstanbul, and the series borrows the name for its largest classical pieces: Cream Frame-Pattern Handwoven Wool Rug, Feshane Series, 251 × 291 cm (8'3" × 9'7"), woven by hand in India, a cream field inside a deep burgundy frame.

01The tone of the ground

One piece. The cream is not one color. It travels between something close to ivory and a warm beige, and the transitions are gradual enough that the field looks lit from underneath rather than painted. Around it the burgundy frame is saturated and unhesitating, and the difference in weight between the two is the whole composition.

02The mark of slow weaving

At about seven square meters this is a room-defining size, and it sets the tone of a room before the furniture gets a say. Months of weaving went into it, at a knot density high enough that the drawing is resolved rather than suggested; the nearest comparison is a high-resolution picture set beside a low-resolution one. The surface is firm and tight, and underfoot it gives a solid feeling rather than a soft one, which is what dense hand-knotting does.

Classical work at this scale and density is scarce now, for the ordinary reason that fewer people are trained to do it. Washing goes to a workshop.
