Beige Rose-and-Leaf Handwoven Mohair Rug, Mohair Series

Roses and rose leaves, drawn the way an Oushak workshop draws them — full-faced, seen from above, with the leaf doing as much work as the flower. Burgundy and green are held in balance rather than one leading, which is unusual: most floral rugs let the flower color dominate and the foliage recede.

01Color that shifts through the day

Here the pale green leaves carry as much of the field as the roses do, and the result is calmer than the color list suggests. Mohair fiber is smoother and more reflective than sheep's wool, so the beige never looks chalky and the burgundy keeps depth even in a dim corner.

02Coming off the loom

Under a walnut table or beside an old chest the warm tones in the beige come up. The whole rug is mohair — the Angora goat's fleece, spun and then knotted loop by loop by hand. It is a long-wearing fiber with more spring than wool and rather more shine, and it is used at this scale only occasionally, because mohair is expensive and slower to work.

03Which tone on the ground

That shine has a cost worth stating: on a plain-ground rug, mohair shows the direction of a footstep, and in a busy room you will see traffic before you see wear.
