The story of this rug

A column of heart forms runs down the middle of this rug and stars and flower shapes fill in around them: a hand-knotted Yağcıbedir in navy and red wool, 171 × 245 cm (5'7" × 8'0"), pile and foundation both wool, woven in the Sındırgı hills of Balıkesir.

01Color that shifts through the day

Its proportions sit outside the standard rug sizes, and that is part of why it looks the way it does. Red rises off the deep navy rather than sitting on it, because almost nothing stands between the two tones to soften the meeting — cream appears in small quantities only, and where it does it sharpens a motif instead of lightening the field.

02Reading the motif

Symmetrical figures repeat through the borders the whole way round, so the field is closed on all four sides and the eye stays inside it. This is drawing that was memorized rather than drafted, and the symmetry is approximate in the way memorized things are. The pattern travelled from the Taurus range to Sındırgı with Yörük herders, and women have knotted it there in the same fixed vocabulary ever since.

03From the hand of the weaver

Wool on wool gives a dense, flexible fabric that lies flat without a pad underneath it, and the knot count here is high for the class. What a rug like this will not do is disappear into a room.

04Where the Yağcıbedir comes from

It is the strongest thing on any floor it goes on, so a space that already carries pattern will fight it. Hand-knotted wool on wool, in Sındırgı, Balıkesir. 171 × 245 cm (5'7" × 8'0") — narrower and longer than the usual rug proportion. Hearts in a central column, with stars and flower forms around them. Deep navy ground, red motifs, cream used sparingly for definition. Symmetrical border figures on all four sides. Knotted from memory, which is why the repeats are close rather than exact. A high knot count, in the Yağcıbedir manner. A single piece.

Washing by a rug specialist. It was made to be walked on for fifty years, and it is at the beginning of that.

The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:

Living room

At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.

It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.

Care — three rules

Vacuum regularly

Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.

Treat spills before they dry

Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.

Leave washing to a professional

Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.

Which size should I choose for a living room?

At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.

How long does shipping take, and what does it cost?

Can the rug be used over underfloor heating?

It depends on the pile height. Low-pile woven rugs work with underfloor heating and do not block the heat. If you are unsure, send the product code to Client Services on WhatsApp.

How does the price change between sizes?

Pricing is by the square meter. The price per square meter is shown next to the price, and it updates as you select a size.

Can I see the rug in Ankara?
