Red Vintage Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

Small enough to sit in front of a single chair — 120 × 175 cm (3'11" × 5'9") — and red enough to be the reason for the chair: an Anatolian hand-knotted wool rug taken from an older piece, sheared, dyed again and dried.

Plain field, no border of consequence, and one of it. At this size a color has to be right, because there is not enough surface for a pattern to rescue it. The red is strong and slightly variable, deeper in patches where the old pile held more dye, and it does what small red rugs do: it marks a corner as somewhere to sit rather than somewhere to pass. Boutiques and small studies use them for exactly that.

02How it feels underfoot

In a large room it will look like an accident. Wool for the pile, cotton for the structure, as the original weaver made it. Shearing has left the piece thin and light, so it can be lifted, shaken and relaid in a minute, and the shortened pile gives dirt nowhere much to go.

03Which tone on the ground

It has already had one life and shows it in small ways: an edge that is not quite straight, a tone that shifts across the width. Washing goes to a specialist. An earlier Anatolian hand-knotting, sheared thin, re-dyed and dried out. Wool pile on a cotton structure. A strong red with patchy depth where the old pile took more dye. 120 × 175 cm (3'11" × 5'9") — a reading chair, a small study, a shop corner. Too small to carry a large room; it is meant to mark one spot. Thin and light: liftable and relayable in a minute. Washing goes out to a specialist. A single rug, and no twin. Small rugs are the ones people take with them when they move, which is the best thing that can be said about any object.
