Classic pattern. The motif is built while the rug is woven; there is no layer printed on afterward. There is beige, cream, taupe in the ground.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. Where a rug is from is read in its knot and its yarn more than in its pattern; that is why the place on the spec sheet matters.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Once a week with a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile, is enough for everyday care.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
133 × 197 cm, and the drawing is fifteenth-century Oushak
The motifs come first here: fourteenth- and fifteenth-century Oushak drawing, redrawn rather than copied, carried on a cream ground. It is a handwoven wool rug, 133 × 197 cm (4'4" × 6'6"), tied on the Anatolian double knot in Türkiye and made for Halıcızade by Çınhar, a workshop whose designs have won prizes at international rug competitions. Cream is the hardest ground to weave well, because nothing hides in it.
Every knot of the ornament reads at full strength, and the border has to hold the field without darkening it. What the Oushak drawing gives at this scale is proportion — a small rug with a large rug's sense of interval, so the pattern never looks shrunk to fit.
Silk appears in some Harem pieces where a motif needs lift; in a cream ground its work is subtle, and you find it by turning your head rather than by looking. The wool is Erzurum fleece, soft and bright and hard-wearing in that order.
The double knot is the Anatolian technique the workshop uses throughout the series, and it is what holds the pile upright under a chair leg. A cream field is honest about a house: it will show a spill sooner than a dark rug does, and it should not go under a dining table for that reason.
Have it washed by a professional and it comes back the color it started. Handwoven in Türkiye by Çınhar for Halıcızade. Wool pile from Erzurum fleece, on the Anatolian double knot. Drawing taken from fourteenth- and fifteenth-century Oushak motifs. 133 × 197 cm (4'4" × 6'6") — a bedside, study or hallway size. Some rugs in the Harem series carry real Bursa silk in the motifs. A cream ground shows marks that a dark ground hides; keep it away from the dining table. Send it out to be washed. A single piece. In ten years the cream will have warmed by a shade or two, which is the one change in it that nobody minds.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
