Classic pattern. The motif is not printed on the surface; it is built as the rug is woven. The ground is gray.
This rug is woven in India and carries the weaving tradition of that region. The place of production is stated openly on the spec sheet.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Blot a spill with a dry cloth instead of rubbing it; rubbing spreads the stain and mats the pile.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Motifs raised a hair above gray, silk over a wool field
Fourteen knots by fourteen, tied by hand in India: a Jaipur Series Oushak-pattern rug, 168 × 254 cm (5'6" × 8'4"), a gray ground with beige, cream and earth tones in the drawing, wool pile on a cotton foundation and silk through the motifs. That density is why the pattern has no stepped edges anywhere in it. Gray is the difficult color in a rug: cold light turns it blue and warm light turns it muddy. This one is held in the middle by the beige and cream worked into the pattern, which warms it just enough.
The drawing comes from Oushak, the town and district in western Anatolia that has been sending medallion and vine patterns into the trade since the fifteenth century, and it is carried in a low relief, the motifs raised very slightly above the field. A cotton foundation takes the tension; wool takes the wear; silk takes the light.
The relief comes out of the handwork itself over a long time at the loom, not from any cutting afterward, and you can find it with a palm before you can see it. This is a quiet rug, and it will disappear in a room that already has a lot of pattern in it — a real limitation, not a virtue in disguise.
Vacuum it lightly and hand the washing to a workshop. Hand-knotted in India at a 14 by 14 knot count. Wool pile over a cotton foundation; the motifs alone are silk. Gray field warmed by beige, cream and earth tones in the pattern. Oushak drawing, carried in a low relief you can feel before you see it. 168 × 254 cm (5'6" × 8'4") — a long room, or a dining table with the chairs pulled out. It reads quietly and will be lost in a heavily patterned room. Professional washing. One piece. The kind of rug people notice on the third visit rather than the first.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
