On the surface: Wool, Cotton. The kind of yarn sets the hand of the rug, its shine and what its care asks, all together.
Traditional, Tribal pattern; the motif edges sit on the order of the warp, so they come out sharp. The ground is gray.
This rug is woven in Afghanistan. Knowing where a rug comes from is not only a matter of curiosity: yarn, dye and weaving habits change from region to region.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. In a rug in direct sun the color opens unevenly over the years; drawing the curtain halfway or turning the rug now and then prevents that.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
No motif repeats itself, plum and gold over gray wool
Nothing about this rug repeats, which also means the photograph is the rug and not a sample of a run. Gray Anatolian Hand-Knotted Wool Rug, Şahzade Series — multicolored motifs on a plain gray ground, tied by hand in Afghanistan on a cotton base, 153 × 210 cm (5'0" × 6'11"). Orange, turquoise, plum and gold-yellow come up out of the gray, arranged as medallion figures across the field with symbols set into the corners.
Each motif has been drawn its own way, so what looks at first like repetition turns out to be variation held to a rhythm. The gray underneath is what makes that work. It is calm enough to carry four saturated colors without the whole thing becoming a shout. Afghan weaving of this kind is worked from memory instead of a drawing on paper, and this piece was tied with the double knot, which roughly doubles the time at the loom and keeps the pattern edges sharp for decades.
The surface you touch is 100% wool. Below it, cotton forms the frame, carrying a trace of recycled synthetic thread for strength. It gives off almost no fluff and very little dust. Look at it twice and you will find something you missed. Hand-knotted in Afghanistan, from a weaving tradition centuries deep. The surface underfoot is 100% wool; the frame beneath is cotton with a trace of recycled synthetic thread. Double knot, which is why the piece took months and why the drawing stays sharp. Orange, turquoise, plum and gold-yellow medallion figures on plain gray. Corner symbols, each one drawn differently. 153 × 210 cm (5'0" × 6'11") — an entrance hall, a side room, or a small seating group. Very low shedding, and easy to vacuum. One piece; the variations in it belong to this rug alone. Gray grounds are usually chosen to play safe, and this one is the opposite of that.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
