On the surface: Natural, Wool, Silk. The kind of yarn sets the hand of the rug, its shine and what its care asks, all together.
Classic pattern; the motif edges sit on the order of the warp, so they come out sharp. The ground is gray.
This rug is woven in India. Knowing where a rug comes from is not only a matter of curiosity: yarn, dye and weaving habits change from region to region.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. In a rug in direct sun the color opens unevenly over the years; drawing the curtain halfway or turning the rug now and then prevents that.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Gray, a true circle, its motifs lit from one side only
Real silk goes into the drawing and nowhere else, and the ground beneath it is wool: a gray Oushak-pattern round rug from the Jaipur series, a circle of 183 × 183 cm (6'0" × 6'0"), knotted in India over a cotton foundation, with beige and cream motifs spread across a gray field.
Only one was made at this size. Gray is the steady part and everything else moves against it. The motifs are worked small, each one finished rather than suggested, and they are distributed evenly across the circle instead of being gathered into a single center.
The silk stands a hair proud of the wool around it, so the pattern catches a lamp from one side of a room and goes quiet from the other. For a rug carrying this much ornament the overall effect is unusually calm. The knotting is Jaipur Rugs' work and runs to months on a single circle, tied at 14 by 14 on a cotton warp with wool making the field. Confining the silk to the motifs is a practical decision as much as a visual one: silk marks faster than wool does, and keeping it inside the drawing puts the wear on the tougher fiber.
Regular vacuuming holds the pile up. Anything wetter than that should leave the house. Knotted by hand in India by Jaipur Rugs, at 14 by 14. Wool field over a cotton foundation, with genuine silk in the motifs. Gray ground, with the drawing carried in beige and cream. 183 × 183 cm (6'0" × 6'0") — a true circle, for a hall or under a round table. The silk sits slightly above the wool, so the pattern lights up from one direction. Vacuum at home; send it out for anything more. A single piece at these dimensions. Six feet of circle is a decision rather than a floor covering, and this one is quiet enough to live with.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
